Genre: Progressive Metal, Sludge Metal

Brent Hinds left Mastodon in early 2025. He was killed in a motorcycle accident that August, before the band he co-founded had finished processing what his departure even meant. Marrow Deep, released August 28, 2026 via Loma Vista Recordings, Mastodon’s ninth studio album and their first for that label, was written and recorded inside that specific window of grief, and it was shaped by a second loss running parallel to the first: drummer Brann Dailor lost his mother during the same period. An album this apparently technical, built on complex time signatures and layered vocal harmonies, turns out to be, underneath all of it, a record about two men learning to keep making music while burying people they loved.

That context is not background information for Marrow Deep. It is the album’s actual subject, and reviewing the record without it would mean reviewing a different, lesser album than the one Mastodon actually made. Remaining founders Dailor, Bill Kelliher, and Troy Sanders wrote this material as a trio before Nick Johnston and João Nogueira were confirmed as permanent additions, and the compositions carry the marks of that grief-driven urgency directly, less interested in the showier riffing of the band’s earlier catalogue than in finding a shape sturdy enough to hold what had actually happened to them.

What Marrow Deep Actually Mourns

Your Ghost Again, released as a standalone single months before the album itself, states the record’s emotional thesis almost too plainly to need further explanation. This is grief addressed directly rather than metabolised into metaphor, and the fact that Mastodon let it stand alone first, ahead of any album context, suggests the band knew exactly how much weight that single song was carrying before they had decided how to build an album around it. Snakes for Dinner, the second advance single, features Josh Homme on guest vocals and reads, in context, less like a genre flex than like a band reaching outward for company in the middle of something isolating.

Hinds’s actual absence is the harder thing to describe, because it shows up as a shape rather than a sound. Nick Johnston’s guitar work across the record is genuinely excellent, and reviewers who have heard the album consistently note how well he and Nogueira integrate into the band’s established chemistry. But integration is not the same thing as replacement, and Marrow Deep does not pretend otherwise. Barbarians Blood, the album’s opener, carries an aggression that reads less like the band’s old sludge-era instinct returning and more like something closer to anger with nowhere else to go. Out Like a Lamb, arriving mid-album, slows into something closer to elegy, and the contrast between the two tracks is the record’s clearest evidence that Mastodon built this album to hold contradictory feelings rather than resolve them into one consistent tone.

Why the Album Refuses a Clean Resolution

Moth and Bone, singled out by listeners as an early favourite, earns that response by refusing to tell the listener how to feel about what happened. The song moves through Mastodon’s now-signature blend of prog structure and sludge weight without ever landing on a tidy emotional conclusion, which is the most honest choice available to a band writing about a death that offers no tidy conclusion of its own. Grief that resolves cleanly inside a thirteen-track sequence is grief dramatized for effect. Marrow Deep, to its considerable credit, keeps circling the same wound across its full runtime rather than pretending a bridge and a key change can close it.

This is, by nearly universal critical account, among the strongest records Mastodon has made since 2009’s Crack the Skye, and that comparison is worth sitting with rather than treating as a simple compliment. Crack the Skye was also a grief record, written in the direct aftermath of Dailor’s sister’s death. Mastodon has now made two of their most acclaimed albums out of the worst things that have happened to them, seventeen years apart, which says less about the band chasing a formula and more about what actually seems to unlock their best writing. Marrow Deep does not sound like a band recovering from loss. It sounds like a band that has learned, the hard way, twice now, how to build something durable directly out of it.
