The email arrives on a Tuesday morning in April. It contains the words “we are pleased to inform you” and the word “congratulations” and, buried in the fifth paragraph, the actual number. The number is 3%. You read it twice. You calculate the monthly increase after tax. It works out to slightly less than the weekly grocery run. You close the email. You open LinkedIn. You scroll for a while. You close LinkedIn. You go back to work. This is the appraisal cycle. This is how it feels.

Imtiaz Ali released Tamasha in November 2015. Ranbir Kapoor plays Ved, a mechanical engineer in a Pune corporate job who is quietly dying inside a life he built by following every reasonable instruction he was ever given. Deepika Padukone plays Tara, a woman he meets in Corsica, where they pretend to be other people and briefly touch the versions of themselves they suspected they might be. A.R. Rahman scored it. It did decent box office. It has aged into the single most accurate diagnosis of Indian corporate life any filmmaker has produced in twenty years. Ali probably did not mean to. He was writing about identity. He accidentally wrote a documentary.

The Dry Promotion Imtiaz Ali’s Tamasha Predicted

Ved’s job in Tamasha is, structurally, a Dry Promotion. He was hired as an engineer. His responsibilities expanded. He now manages a team, handles vendors, presents to leadership, and covers for at least two people who left. His title changed once, briefly, in year three. Every subsequent raise has been technically a raise but has failed to keep pace with inflation, rent, and the specific price acceleration of his father’s medications. The Reserve Bank of India recorded inflation at 5.1% in April 2026. The average IT-sector raise is running 8 to 10%. The tech professional getting 3% is basically taking a pay cut. Do the math.

Call this the Subsidised Audit: the practice of testing whether an employee will perform an expanded role without expanded pay. Every additional responsibility handed to Ved, and to you reading this in 2026, is a data point. Will you absorb it? Will you raise the issue? Will you raise it effectively? If the answer to the first is yes and the rest are no, the company just extracted the value of a promotion without paying for it. The 3% raise is not compensation, is it? It is a subscription fee for continued employment. Nobody says it out loud. You already know.

The Character Ved Is Playing

The genius of Tamasha is that it does not treat Ved’s misery as a personal failing. It treats it as a structural condition. Ved has been playing a character for years. The character has a certain kind of smile, the kind you develop after five years of quarterly reviews, and a certain email cadence, and a certain nod during standups. The character was rewarded, at every stage, for playing the character well. The system is not asking Ved to be a person. It is asking Ved to be a character, and the more consistently he performs it, the more the system rewards him with dry promotions and offsites in Goa where the character can sit by a pool for two days before the laptop comes back out.

The film’s central image is not Ved crying in his apartment. It is Ved rehearsing his own resignation speech in the mirror and then deciding not to give it. Every Indian corporate professional has stood in front of that mirror. Some of them stood there this morning. When did staying at a job start feeling like a slow admission of defeat? You stay not because you love the work but because the exit costs are high and the character you have played for six years has fused into your sense of self. Leaving the job feels like leaving yourself. That is what the system was built to produce. That is the whole scam.

The Corsica Interlude

The Corsica scenes are the parts everyone remembers. Ranbir and Deepika, playing invented versions of themselves, refusing to exchange real names, living in a bracketed reality where the corporate character does not exist. Ali shot them in Bonifacio, on the southern tip of the island, where the cliffs are white and the sea is a shade of blue that looks Photoshopped. That colour was real. He kept the cinematography raw so it would not look like a tourism board advertisement, and the choice worked.

Corsica in the film is a metaphor for a specific escape hatch. Every corporate professional has one. It is the fantasy that if you could just get out of the office, out of the city, out of the country, for two weeks, the real version of yourself would come back. You would remember what you used to want. This is what you tell yourself on the Sunday night before a Monday you are dreading. It is also, weirdly, exactly what every wellness app in your phone is monetising, right down to the meditation timer that reminds you to breathe.

The film’s honesty is that the Corsica escape does not actually work. Ved goes home. He returns to the character. The interlude becomes another entry in his private archive of moments when he almost broke free and did not. That fantasy is a lie, by the way. You are not going to save yourself with a two-week vacation. You are going to save yourself, if you do, by doing something considerably harder. Which is what the second half of the film is about.

The Transactional Detox

What Tamasha proposes in its final act is unglamorous. Ved does not quit in a dramatic flourish or move to a mountain village to tell stories. He returns to work, but as a version of himself that has stopped mistaking the character for the person. He starts telling stories at work. He stops performing consensus. He is bad at it at first. He gets better. The people around him recoil, then grudgingly respect it, then start wanting to work with him for reasons the HR handbook cannot explain.

Call this the Transactional Detox: treating employment as the financial contract it is, stripped of the mythology that makes employees exploitable. It is not a resignation. It is a reframing. You stop treating your employer as a family. You stop treating your manager as a mentor. You stop treating your offer letter as a covenant. You treat all of it as a contract, labour for money, both parties free to renegotiate. The mandatory culture-values workshop taught you the company’s family values on a Tuesday; the layoff email arrived on a Thursday.

The professional who has done the Transactional Detox does not necessarily leave. You might. But you might also stay, negotiate for a real raise, refuse to absorb the next set of responsibilities without a title change, and use every interview offer as a data point about your actual market value. Food for thought, isn’t it? Tamasha is a love story. It is also a corporate strategy document. It just took eleven years for the corporate readers to notice.
