You finished the sprint. You hit the quarterly target. You shipped the deliverable at 11:47 PM on a Thursday. And the reward for finishing the sprint was another sprint. Not a rest. Not a pause. Not even a weekend. Another sprint, starting Monday, with metrics that are somehow higher than last quarter’s, as if the entire purpose of reaching a goal is to prove the goal was set too low. That loop has a sound. It has been playing since 1975.

Led Zeppelin released Kashmir in 1975 on Physical Graffiti. Jimmy Page wrote the riff in DADGAD tuning, a modal tuning that produces an open, droning sound incapable of resolving neatly. John Bonham laid a drum pattern underneath that does not swing, does not groove, and does not relent. It marches. Robert Plant wrote the lyrics two years earlier while driving through the Sahara toward a folklore festival, staring at a road with no apparent end. The song runs eight minutes and thirty-seven seconds. The riff climbs, reaches what feels like a peak, and loops back. It never resolves. Page called it the greatest Led Zeppelin riff. He was right, and the reason it is the greatest is the reason it is also the most accurate diagram of your career.

What Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir Does to a Working Week

In March 2025, Blind surveyed 1,450 verified IT professionals in India. 83% reported burnout. 72% routinely exceed the legal 48-hour workweek. One in four clock 70 hours or more. The companies producing the most extreme weeks include some of the largest names in global technology, and at several of them up to 42% of employees report working more than 70 hours weekly.

The CII-MediBuddy report in 2024 found that 62% of Indian employees across all sectors experience burnout, against a global average of 20%. The McKinsey Health Institute placed India at number one globally for burnout symptoms in 2023, at 59%. Gallup’s 2026 data found that 59% of Indian employees are Not Engaged and that the annual cost runs to $351 billion. These are not opinions. They are measurements. And the measurements describe a workforce running on empty while being told, by the institutions draining it, that the problem is individual resilience.

The Sahara Dressed as Kashmir

Plant wrote the lyrics in a desert. Not the destination the title promises. The Sahara, not Kashmir. The song is named for the paradise imagined during the crossing, not the crossing itself. The title is the dream. The music is the reality. And the two never meet.

Every young professional entering the Indian workforce is sold a Kashmir. Financial freedom. A flat in a good part of the city. An onsite assignment abroad. Stock options that vest in four years. A title with the word Senior in it before thirty. That is the paradise. The march itself is the Sahara. Midnight calls. Weekend standups. Friday 5 PM emergencies manufactured to test whether you will complain. A culture that measures commitment by the green dot on Slack at 10 PM. The quarterly target is hit. The riff loops. The annual review is cleared. The riff loops. The promotion arrives, and the promotion turns out to be a Dry Promotion with a Diwali hamper attached. The riff loops. Who designed the loop?

Travelers of Time and Space

Plant describes himself in the song as a traveler of both time and space. In 2026 India, that is not a metaphor. It is a job description. India is home to over 1,700 Global Capability Centres. Millions of professionals sit at desks in Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai with their clocks set to New York, London, or San Francisco. They eat dinner at midnight because their standup is at 1 AM. They attend their child’s school function on a laptop screen between two calls. They sleep when the Western hemisphere sleeps, which means they stop sleeping in rhythm with anyone they love.

The nervous system was not built for this. Shift work disrupts circadian regulation, suppresses melatonin, and raises the risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and depression. These are documented medical outcomes of forcing human biology onto a clock built for a different latitude. The GCC professional is the purest expression of Plant’s lyric, a traveler displaced in both time and space, physically present in one country and temporally imprisoned in another. What exactly is the reward for finishing the sprint?

Demanding the Resolution

Kashmir is eight minutes and thirty-seven seconds of a riff that never finds its home key. The tension is deliberate. The lack of resolution is the point. Page built the song to create the feeling of an endless march through a landscape that promises arrival and never delivers it. The Indian workforce is living inside that song.

Call it the Unresolving Loop: the structural design of corporate sprint culture in which every completed cycle resets to the beginning at higher intensity, ensuring the destination is permanently approached and never reached. A musical piece that never resolves eventually becomes maddening. A career structured the same way produces the same result. The riff must find its home key. The sprint cycle must have an actual endpoint, not a cosmetic pause before the next sprint. And if the system will not provide the resolution, the resolution must be demanded, by logging off, by leaving, by refusing to accept that the loop is the life. The song never reaches Kashmir. Is that a failure of the traveller, or a failure of the road?
