How Shreddage 3 Argent Made the 9-String Guitar Accessible to Anyone With a MIDI Keyboard

A 9-string guitar is not a common instrument. It is basically a weapon designed for a specific purpose, producing the lowest, heaviest, most crushing guitar tones physically possible, and almost nobody owns one, let alone plays one well. Extended-range guitars went from novelty to standard equipment across the 2000s, with seven strings becoming unremarkable and eight strings becoming the djent default, but nine remains genuinely rare. The lowest string on a standard-tuned nine sits below the range of a four-string bass, which creates problems for amplifiers, pickups, and mix engineers in roughly that order.

Shreddage 3 Argent samples one in full and hands the result to anyone with a MIDI keyboard, which is either democratisation or a menace depending on your genre. Impact Soundworks have been building the Shreddage line since 2011, and the scripting maturity shows in ways that a first-generation library from a smaller developer would not manage.

The library records through two pickup positions, neck and bridge, direct-injected, meaning you supply your own amp simulation and shape the tone from a clean DI source. That decision matters, because it means the library integrates with whatever rig you already trust. Sampling a guitar through a specific amp locks the buyer into that amp’s character forever. Sampling the DI leaves the decision open.

Advantages

The palm mute chugging is extraordinary. Five layers of palm mute variation, combined with the direct-injected signal, produce a chug that sits in a mix with real authority once amped. Palm mutes are the single hardest guitar articulation to sample convincingly because the attack character changes with pressure, and five layers is enough that the machine-gun effect never appears.

The range is enormous and the articulation control is deep. For producing metal that needs the lowest tunings, this removes the need to own or record a genuinely rare instrument, and it removes the need to find a player who can handle one cleanly. That second problem is bigger than the first.

Disadvantages

The instrument is unapologetically heavy. Producers looking for clean jazz tones or acoustic warmth are in the wrong place entirely.

The DI-only approach means you must bring your own amp simulation, which adds a step and a skill requirement. Beginners without a good amp sim will not get the sound they heard in the demos, and the resulting disappointment will feel like the library’s fault when it is not. Kontakt Player compatibility also means the library runs in the free player, but the full Kontakt version unlocks scripting depth some users will want.

Use Cases

Metal and djent production: this is the primary use case and the one Argent was designed for, palm-muted rhythm walls and low-tuned riffs that would otherwise require an instrument almost nobody owns.

Film and trailer scoring: the crushing low end suits tension and impact cues, and the DI signal takes processing well beyond amp simulation.

Hybrid electronic-metal: layer the DI chug under synths for weight that a bass patch alone cannot deliver, and let the guitar occupy the sub range that would otherwise be empty.

Why Shreddage 3 Argent Ships Direct-Injected Rather Than Amped

The decision looks like a limitation and functions as the library’s longest-lived asset. Sampling a guitar through a chosen amplifier bakes that amplifier’s midrange character, power-section compression, and cabinet response permanently into every note, which means the buyer inherits a tonal decision made by someone else in a different year for a different mix. Amp simulation has moved fast enough that a library amped in 2019 sounds dated in 2026 while a clean DI does not age at all. There is a mix-engineering consequence too. A nine-string’s lowest string sits below the fundamental range of a four-string bass, which creates real low-end conflicts. A DI signal can be high-passed, multiband-compressed, and re-amped per section. An already-amped sample cannot be untangled once the cabinet response is printed, which is why the extra setup step the DI approach demands buys years of usable life in return. The library asks you to bring a skill. In exchange it does not expire.
