Why Your Marriage Needs Pink Floyd’s Darkest Masterpiece
Pink Floyd Mother mapped the invisible war inside every Indian marriage. Systemic Kinship Enmeshment is the failure to cut the psychological cord.
The couple has been married for three years. They live in a two-bedroom flat in Pune. The second bedroom is technically an office, but it is understood by everyone, without anyone ever saying it, that the room is really for when one partner’s mother visits, which is often, and for longer each time. The affected partner has stopped mentioning it. The enmeshed partner has never noticed there is anything to mention. This is not a marriage of two people. This is a marriage of two people and a psychological third party who is not in the room and controls most of what happens in it.
Pink Floyd released Mother in 1979 on The Wall. Roger Waters wrote it. The song is a conversation between a child and an overprotective parent who promises to keep the child safe, screen their relationships, and make sure the parent’s fears become theirs. The parent in the song is not cruel. That is the whole point. The parent is loving, protective, and absolutely suffocating, and by the time the child is an adult they cannot tell the difference between their parent’s fear and their own judgement. It is one of the most uncomfortable songs Pink Floyd recorded. It is also the most accurate map of the Indian marriage that anyone has ever produced.
What Pink Floyd’s Mother Put in the Room
Every marriage in India begins with a specific fiction: that two individuals are getting married. What is actually happening is that two family systems are merging, and each partner arrives carrying a set of obligations, expectations, and unexamined loyalties that predate the marriage by two or three decades. The enmeshed partner does not experience their loyalty to a parent as a problem. They experience it as love. They are unable to see that the loyalty operates as a veto over their own household, because the veto is invisible to the person who has never had it turned against them.
Call this Systemic Kinship Enmeshment: the inability to distinguish between the emotional obligations of the family of origin and the structural needs of the marital unit. It is not the same as respecting your parents. Respect is healthy. Enmeshment is when the parent’s preference automatically outranks the spouse’s, when the adult child cannot make a household decision without an invisible consultation, when “my mother would be hurt” ends every conversation before it starts. When did honouring your parents become indistinguishable from obeying them?
The Wall Gets Built One Brick at a Time
The genius of Mother is that Waters wrote it as a slow accumulation. The parent does not trap the child in one dramatic act. It happens gradually, one protective gesture at a time, each individually reasonable, until the child is walled in. Indian enmeshment works the same way. It is never one big betrayal. It is the accumulation of small deferrals. The honeymoon destination the parent preferred. The flat chosen for proximity to the in-laws. The festival always spent on one side of the family. The name of the first grandchild, which turns out to have been decided before the couple was even consulted.
The affected spouse in the Pune flat did not lose the marriage in a single argument. The marriage was lost in a thousand small moments where the other spouse chose the path of least resistance, which was always, without exception, the path a parent had already cleared. When a family holiday was being booked last month, the enmeshed partner instinctively checked a parent’s calendar before the spouse’s. That check went unnoticed even by the person making it. That is the tell. The enmeshment is most complete precisely when it is invisible to the person inside it.
Why This Is Worse in 2026
The joint family structure is dissolving in urban India, but the psychology it produced has not dissolved with it. The couple lives separately now, in their own flat, in a different city from both sets of parents. On paper this is independence. In practice, the smartphone has made the umbilical connection permanent. The parent is one video call away, and the video call comes daily, and the daily call means their opinions arrive in real time on every decision the household makes. Physical distance created the appearance of separation. WhatsApp abolished it.
A 2024 study on family dynamics in urban Indian marriages found that interference from the family of origin remains one of the leading reported sources of marital conflict, and that the conflict is significantly more common when one partner has not established what psychologists call differentiation of self. That is the clinical term for the thing Waters wrote a song about in 1979. The child who cannot tell a parent’s fear from their own judgement grows into the adult who cannot tell a parent’s preference from their own decision. The wall was built one brick at a time. The child helped.
What the Song Actually Asks
Mother ends with a question that has haunted listeners for four decades. The child, now grown, asks whether the wall they live behind was built by the parent or by themselves. Waters leaves it unresolved, because the honest answer is both. The parent laid the first bricks. The adult child kept laying them long after the parent stopped, because the wall had become comfortable, and dismantling it would mean disappointing the one person the child was raised never to disappoint.
The marriage in the Pune flat can be saved, but not by the affected spouse. It can only be saved by the enmeshed spouse doing the single hardest thing the enmeshed adult child can do, which is to disappoint a parent on purpose, in a small way, and survive it, and discover that the sky does not fall. Differentiation is not estrangement. Nobody is asking you to abandon your parents. You are being asked to build a household whose centre of gravity is your marriage and not your childhood. Isn’t it strange how the bravest thing a grown adult can do is book a holiday without checking the wrong calendar first?
